Full Description

The remains of a linear Roman boundary ditch was recorded in March 2018, during archaeological excavation of land to the west of Newgate Lane. The excavation had been prompted by the finding of a late 3rd to mid 4th century Roman coin hoard in this location. The hoard was found on the 16th of March 2018, and was fully removed and reported to the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (as PAS object LANCUM-F93E5B). The hoard had been discovered in the same location as another Roman coin hoard, found just over 40 years before, in 1976 (see MLI30477). The earlier hoard was largely comprised of 2nd century coins, and may be considered unlikely to have been buried at the same time as the later hoard, although the close proximity of the two might suggest some common focus of activity in this area, such as a temple or other ritual site. The excavated ditch was aligned on an east to west axis, and measured roughly 1.6m wide by 0.24m deep. The hoard was thought to have been previously recovered from the ditch's lower fill, and whilst no further coins were found during the excavation, a small likely redeposited assemblage of Roman pottery sherds and animal bone fragments was identified. The pottery was comprised of a variety of Black Burnished ware, Grey ware, and Shell-tempered ware, with the animal bone largely deriving from bird bones, possibly domestic fowl. {1}
