Full Description
Early 19th century burial ground at the former Caistor House of Industry, later re-modelled as the Caistor Union Workhouse (see MLI52697 for the general workhouse record). The burial ground is known to have been consecrated in 1815, although it may have been extant prior to this, possibly being laid out at the same time the original House of Industry was opened in 1802. {1}{2}{3}
Site visits were conducted in June 2022 and January 2023, to assess the impact of proposed development on land at the western edge of the former Caistor Workhouse and Hospital site. Although largely overgrown by trees and foliage, the burial ground of the former workhouse still survives, with a large number of headstones still extant. With the exception of the burial ground, the entirety of the former workhouse and hospital site has now been redeveloped for housing. It is unclear how much this development has impacted upon the burial ground, with graves at the eastern end potentially having been disturbed or removed. Is it also likely that a significant number of the burials here were not marked with headstones, given the nature of those interred as workhouse residents. {4}{5}
