Full Description

Cropmarks of a series of probable ring ditches with adjacent linear ditches, to the south-west of Crowland. The cropmarks are visible on the Google Maps and Bing Maps aerial photographic layers. Most of the ring ditches lie between two parallel linear ditches which are approximately 50m apart. There are possibly up to 7 sets of ring ditches, measuring up to approximately 28m in diameter. Some of these sets of ditches appear to have smaller ring ditches within the larger ring ditches. The ditches possibly constitute prehistoric round barrows which may be part of, or associated with, the possible barrow cemetery at Crowland (see MLI20265). Crowland and the area of these possible barrows are located on a gravel outcrop on the edge of The Fens. This outcrop, or peninsula, would have begun to be surrounded by increasingly marshy land in the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. It is during this period when the area may have acquired some sort of funerary significance. {1}{2}{3}
