Full Description

A memorial commemorating the victims of the catastrophic East Coast flood of 1953 sits off the North Promenade at Mablethorpe. The memorial takes the form of a large stone boulder with a commemorative plaque attached to its eastern face. The memorial was unveiled in 2013, marking the 60th anniversary of the devastating flood, which occurred on the evening of Saturday 31st January 1953. A combination of a high spring tide and a severe windstorm in the North Sea at that time caused a very large storm tide to sweep across the coastlines of the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Scotland. The waters surged inland, inflicting widespread damage and causing a heavy loss of life. More than 500 people are thought to have died on and off the coast of Britain because of the flood, of which 41 people are believed to have died in Lincolnshire. The towns of Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea were especially affected and had to be completely evacuated until the flood waters subsided. {1}{2}{3}
