Full Description

During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording on land to the rear of 83 Backgate, Cowbit, a pond infill deposit was identified in the eastern area of the new building area. At the base of the infill was a waterlogged peat layer. The pond had gradually silted up and was overlain by the topsoil horizon. The deposit contained one sherd of 15th-16th century pottery and the pond does not appear on the First Edition 1888 OS map, suggesting that the pond had a late medieval date of use. {1}{2}
