Full Description

During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording on land at Sandilands, Fen Road, East Kirkby, two ditches were identified forming a ‘T’-shaped intersection in the area of the new building footprint. The north-south aligned ditch contained four sherds of late 12th-mid 13th century pottery from the same vessel, dating the intersection to the medieval period. These may represent part of a former field system of enclosure boundary or drainage ditches. To the north-east were the cuts of two pits in close proximity to each other, suggesting a relationship. One of the pits contained a single sherd of mid 12th-13th century pottery in the fill. These pits were interpreted as possible rubbish pits. {1}{2}
