Full Description

The Crowland gas works was established on this site off Broadway in 1853, with the aim of providing gas to users in the town. Gas was piped for the first time to street lamps and private users in the town on the 30th of September of that year, with a dinner being held by the Crowland Gas and Coke Company on the 21st of December to celebrate this achievement. The works were relatively short-lived, with production at the site thought to have stopped at some point in 1893. Most of the works were dismantled and the site sold at auction in 1899, although the former retort house still survives (see MLI126033). {1}{2}{3}
