Full Description

Former chalk quarry, to the north of Claxby St Andrew. The quarry is thought to have been worked from at least the 18th century, initially producing stone for road construction, but also agricultural lime after a short while. The remains of at least two former brick-built lime kilns are still present on the site, with other kiln sites being marked on historic Ordnance Survey maps of this area. A small smithy building located near the entrance to the quarry would likely have sharpened tools and repaired equipment used in the quarry (see MLI126028). Lime burning within the quarry is believed to have stopped in the late 1950s, with the quarry ceasing all operations by 1968. The site is now in use as a nature reserve, managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. {1}{2}{3}{4}
