Full Description

A Gloster Meteor F8 jet fighter aircraft crashed in this area to the north of Spalding on the 27th of September 1953. The aircraft was designated WE912 from 616 Squadron, based at RAF Finningley, and was flying on a training flight when it suffered an engine fire over Spalding. Rather than ejecting safely, the sole crew member, Pilot Officer George Furniss, chose to stay in the stricken craft and steer it away from the town centre and into open fields. PO Furniss died in the subsequent crash, as the plane came to ground close to Two Plank Bridge over Vernatt's Drain. A memorial to PO Furniss was erected on the site on the 27th of September 2021. The memorial takes the form of a black marble plaque resting on a red brick column. {1}
