Full Description

Historic parkland at The Jungle is depicted on the 1st edition 6" and 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series maps. {1}{2} The parkland is thought to have been laid out in 1820, at the same time that The Jungle house was built (see MLI80449). Samuel Russell Collett is known to have established a small private zoo in the parkland around the Jungle, where he kept deer, buffalo, pheasants and kangaroos. A watercolour painting of The Jungle dated to 1853 shows 3 kangaroos by the pond in front of the house. {3}{4}
