Full Description

A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land at the former site of the King’s Head, High Street, Morton, in 2017. Likely medieval features were identified in two of the trenches. The first of these was in Trench 2. It was a south-west/north-east orientated ditch which extended beyond the south-west corner of the trench and the north-east corner of the trench limits. The ditch had shallow sides and a concaved base, measuring 1.3m wide and 0.22m deep. This ditch appeared to be associated with a similar one in Trench 3, which was shallow with gradual sloping edges and a concaved base, measuring 2.5m wide and 0.4m deep. These ditches were likely to be medieval in origin, and may have represented a former boundary ditch. The ditch in Trench 2 was cut by an oval pit with a width of circa 1m with vertical undercutting edges. The base was not seen, but the fill contained six sherds of late 14th-17th century pottery. {1}{2}
