Description

A programme of trial trenching was undertaken on land at the former site of the King’s Head, High Street, Morton, prior to the proposed construction of a residential development. Three trenches were excavated, measuring 10m x 2m. Two ditches were identified in Trenches 2 and 3. They were on the same alignment and had similar characteristics and fills, suggesting they may be part of the same feature, most likely a former boundary ditch. The ditches were likely to be medieval in origin. The ditch in Trench 2 was cut by a pit containing six sherds of pottery dating to the late medieval/early post-medieval period. The modern cellar of the former King’s Head was encountered in Trench 2, which would have removed any earlier archaeological remains that may have existed in this part of the site. No further archaeological features or finds were identified. {1}{2}
