Full Description

During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording on land adjacent to Walnut House, Maidenwell Lane, Navenby, an assemblage of medieval pottery sherds were recovered from the topsoil. The entire assemblage of eighty-four sherds suggests that the area was occupied from the Saxon period onwards. Most of the pottery recovered was of medieval date, suggesting a peak of activity between the 13th and early 14th centuries. The types of wares are diverse for such a small assemblage, and probably reflects the presence of a market in Navenby. It is also suggested that Navenby would have been ideally placed to be the site of one of the unknown medieval pottery production centres. {1}{2}
