Full Description

During a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at Kingerby Hall for groundworks around the kitchen, a series of medieval features were identified. In the southern excavated footings, a north-south aligned limestone wall foundation was recorded, measuring 0.7m wide. To the east of the wall foundation was a 0.25m layer of brown-grey levelling material containing two sherds of 16th-17th century Frechen stoneware bottles and twelve roof tiles of 15th-16th century date, which was overlain by an almost identical deposit containing a single brick and 13th-15th century roof tile. To the west of the foundation was a possible floor surface of compacted mid yellow-brown silt clay containing two sherds of 13th-16th century Market Rasen Toynton/Bourne ware, eight roof tiles of 15th-16th century date, and a single cow metacarpal. This floor surface was cut by a shallow flat-bottomed pit with frequent charcoal in the lower fill and heat affected material/stone in the upper deposit, suggesting it is a possible hearth or oven. Immediately west of this pit were the remains of a possibly robbed out limestone wall. Another robbed wall was located to the west of the floor surface. This wall was sealed by a firm, dark grey-brown 0.25m thick levelling deposit containing eight roof tiles, brick fragments and a single sherd of Cistercian ware from a 15th-17th century drinking vessel, as well as animal bone. In the north-south excavated footings, two east-west aligned walls were revealed. The most southerly was robbed and contained a fill with a single abraded sherd of 13th century pottery and five 13th century roof tiles. This was overlain by a consolidation surface, which was cut by the second wall, which may have represented an external feature such as a garden wall. Immediately north of this wall was a possible oven or hearth, which appeared to be of oval plan containing three fills. {1}{2}
