Full Description

3 Market Place, Donington, was subject to a site visit and historical research in July 2021, when an assessment of the significance of the building was undertaken. The building dated to at least the late 18th century, and underwent a second phase of construction in the 19th century as the building is extended to an ‘L’ shaped property with a small enclosed courtyard by the 1889 First Edition OS map. The building began use as a bank in the early 20th century, first bought by Midlands Bank Limited. There may have been a third phase of construction when the building was bought by Lloyds Bank in 1964, and these alterations include the staircase, the infilling of the openings to the property and a false mezzanine. The building itself comprises a two-floor former bank building fronting Market Place, surrounded by commercial properties to the east and west in a typical 19th to 20th century high street arrangement. It is likely that the former bank had a domestic space on the first floor. On the ground floor there is a public reception with a counter and an office, and to the rear is an office and three storage rooms, as well as the kitchen and toilet. These were all associated with the Lloyds Bank conversion, which concealed or removed all potential evidence of the building’s former use. Internal brick walls and other features were exposed on the first floor and in the stairwell, showing the 20th century alterations. The internal roof structure was concealed by a modern false ceiling. Part of the late 18th or 19th century west wall building was incorporated into the bank, and two segmental arch windows were visible in the south gable, which appear to have been blocked in the early 20th century. During the site visit, a photographic record of the exterior and interior of the building was also made. {1}
