Full Description

Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow, to the east of The Grange, Halton Holegate. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} A large part of the ridge and furrow remains were the subject of a detailed earthworks survey, conducted in December 2017 to inform the proposed construction of a new agricultural building. The survey identified a possible medieval furlong boundary, comprising a wide ridge which was likely to have been created by the amalgamation of two adjacent ridges. The ridge and furrow was aligned on an east to west axis across the site, although it varied in spacing, possibly indicating the use of oxen at the north of the site and the use of horses in the wetter, low-lying ground at the south. Possible ridge head earthworks were recorded at the west and east of the site. {2}{3}
