Full Description

A small, linear magnetic anomaly was recorded in this location in January 2018, during magnetometry survey of land to the north of Nocton Wood House. The anomaly corresponded well with a former field boundary that is depicted in this area on historic Ordnance Survey maps, and was thought to be of probable post-medieval date. {1}{2} Remains of the former field boundary had previously been identified as a linear cropmark on aerial photographs examined by the National Mapping Programme. The NMP had thought the feature was associated with the remains of the adjacent, probable medieval hollow way (see MLI81889), but the cropmark clearly aligns with the depiction of the former field boundary on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. {3}{4} Subsequent trial trenching conducted in October 2018 confirmed the presence of the former post-medieval field boundary in this location. The boundary ditch was approximately 2.3m wide, and had a late post-medieval ceramic field drain in its base. {5}{6}
