Full Description

St Mary's Church, Swineshead is Decorated & Perpendicular. The chancel was rebuilt in St Mary's Church, Swineshead is Decorated and Perpendicular in style. The chancel was rebuilt in 1847. In normal use. {1}{2} St Mary's Church has a tower with a shortish spire. It has Decorated 6-bay arcades, a Decorated chancel arch, south aisle windows, south porch and clerestory. The roof has tie beams and queenposts. The north aisle is Perpendicular in style while the chancel is Victorian. The monuments in the church include an incised slab to Richard Bennett (d.1520) in the north aisle; a chancel frieze of children for a monument to Sir John Lockton, 1628. A brick vault under the chancel in Swineshead church was discovered when a floorboard was lifted for ventilation. On examination the vault contained two coffins (one for a man and one for a woman) with the remains of a third coffin and a skeleton. The large coffin rested on beams fixed across the vault from wall to wall, one beam being rotten. The coffins were of leather covered oak with a lead lining and iron fittings too corroded to see any inscriptions, but in style almost identical to the coffin seen at Gedney in 1966 that dated to 1844. {3}{4} The church is dated to about 1300, with further work of the early 14th century, late 14th century and 15th century.
