Full Description

An Avro Lancaster Mk III bomber aircraft crashed close to this location on the 13th of July 1945. The aircraft was designated PB422 of 97 Squadron, and was based at RAF Coningsby. The plane was being sent on a bombing exercise when its port outer engine caught fire during takeoff. The aircraft stalled and crashed into trees, coming to rest in the River Bain between Tattershall and Coningsby. The exact site of the crash is not clearly recorded, but is believed to be in this vicinity. All four of the crew members were killed in the incident. A memorial plaque to the victims of the crash is located on the nearby Butt's Bridge (see MLI125801). {1}{2}
