Full Description

Fairlea is a pair of mid 19th century adjoining cottages, located off the village green at Church Lane. They were built as accommodation for agricultural labourers working on the Langton Estate, which was owned by the Earl of Scarbrough. Historic mapping evidence indicates the building was constructed at some point between 1837 and 1885. The building is of two storeys, and is built of red brick laid in English bond, with shallow-pitched slate roofs. The structure is T-shaped in plan, with symmetrically arranged side entrances, and a three room layout on each storey. Each cottage had a separate privy, coal shed and store in the single-storey rear offshoot range, which has since been demolished. A pump house also stood beyond this rear range, and was shared by both cottages. Small lean-to extensions were added to the side of each cottage in the 20th century, which covered the original entrance doors. The front elevation is symmetrical; each cottage has a single window on both the ground and first floor beneath a blind dormer. Each window comprises a timber six-over-six vertical sliding sash beneath a segmental arch, with a stone sill. The blind dormers and both gable ends also feature decorative bargeboards with quatrefoil cut-out motifs. The side elevations have a single narrow two-over-two vertical sliding sash window, also with a segmental arch and stone sill, on the first floor. The windows on the rear elevation of each cottage may have originally been a single window on the ground floor, but these were both enlarged in the 20th century, and above a pair of three-over-three vertical sliding sashes under a segmental arch with a stone sill. The bargeboards and cast iron downpipes are painted dark red, possibly a vestige of their ownership by the estate. The interiors of the cottages were described in 1917 as having a kitchen, living room, dairy, and three bedrooms. The cottages have a shared central chimney stack, which provided fireplaces to the former living rooms and kitchens, and the two larger bedrooms upstairs. Surviving historic features include small cast iron fire places in the bedrooms, fitted cupboards in alcoves downstairs, some doors, and skirting boards. {1}
