Full Description

An assemblage of post-medieval artefacts and material was identified in early 2016, during archaeological monitoring of the construction of an extension to the rear of the Vine Street Surgery. The assemblage was recovered from a series of post-medieval and modern made ground deposits and pits, and comprised post-medieval pottery, ceramic building material, clay tobacco pipes and animal bone fragments. The pottery sherds derived from 26 different vessels, made from 12 different local and regional pottery types. The most common type was Brown-glazed Earthenware pottery, with 13 sherds from large cylindrical jars, an oval dish, a jar or chamber pot and a large drinking vessel or jug. Other types include 2 sherds of 16th-17th century Midlands Yellow ware from a cup and bowl, 5 sherds from Staffordshire-type Mottled ware drinking vessels, and 6 sherds of Creamware pottery from a tiny bowl, a strainer or collander and a jug. The clay tobacco pipe collection was comprised of 23 pieces of pipe stem and 5 bowls. Three of the bowls were complete and had some basic rouletted decoration. The animal bone assemblage was comprised of the remains of cattle, sheep/goats, pig, dog, rabbit and other unspecified medium and large mammals. Nine of the fragments show evidence of butchery, including heavy chop marks from disarticulation of the carcass and finer knife marks from removal of the meat from the bones. {1}{2}
