Full Description

A watermill named Burgh on Bain Mill is marked on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. It is labelled as a corn mill, and is of likely post-medieval date. {1} This is the first watermill on the River Bain, after the river rises from springs to the south of Ludford. Two other streams join the Bain to the north of the mill, providing a sufficient head of water for power. The current mill building is thought to date to c.1820, being built at the same time as the adjoining farmhouse (see MLI126663). An earlier, 18th century mill building is thought to have occupied the same site, prior to its demolition and re-building as the current structure, with material from the previous structure likely being re-used on site. The present structure is of three storeys, and is built of uncoursed ironstone rubble, with red brick quoins and and a brick dentil course below the hipped, pantile-covered roof. The mill was powered by a 14ft diameter wheel, housed in the surviving enclosed wheelhouse at the eastern gable. This wheelhouse has largely filled with soil since the wheel was removed in the 1950s, and it is therefore difficult to determine the former water entry level. The mill was equipped with three pairs of stones on the first floor, and two dressing machines on the ground floor. The second floor would have contained grain bins and sack storage, with a sack hoist in the roof space used to transfer material between the floors. The mill was worked solely by waterpower during its working life, with operation thought to have stopped at some point in the 1930s. All of the machinery was removed at some point in the mid 20th century, and the building has remained largely unused since milling ceased. {2}
