Full Description

The group of buildings at 200, 201 and 201A High Street were the subject of a programme of historic building survey, conducted in September 2012, prior to their proposed demolition. The intial structures date from the 18th century, although stonework elements in the cellar indicates that an earlier building stood on the site, which likely dates to the 15th or 16th century. The buildings are constructed primarily out of brick, and range from 1 to 3 storeys in height. They have undergone many alterations, extensions and additions leading to the current layout. Open garden and yard space at the rear of the properties was infilled in the early 20th century. The buildings have been used for a variety of retail, warehouse, and professional purposes, with some domestic occupations. Shops at the premises included a chemists, clock sellers, a tailor, and Stokes tea and coffee merchants. Architects, grocers, and chartered accountants used the buildings as office space. {1}{2}
