Full Description

Fragments of cremated human remains were identified in May 2012, during trial trenching on the site of the former Bull and Chain public house, at 7 Langworthgate, Lincoln. A collection of redeposited early to middle saxon pottery was also recovered on the site. There were 29 sherds of Charnwood ware, 13 sherds of generic early to middle Saxon pottery, and a few sherds each of Oolithic limestone-tempered fabrics, and early to mid Saxon sandstone tempered ware. The Charnwood ware sherds are from 6 different vessels, 3 of which are decorated with complex bands of combing and incised lines, stamps, and bosses. The pottery was typical of East Midlands assemblages of this date, but a number of the sherds are intricately decorated, which is unusual. It was thought that an Anglo-Saxon cremation burial was disturbed during the construction of the medieval building that is also located on the site (see PRN 71263). It was thought possible that the site coincides with a pre-Christian cremation cemetery. {1}{2}
