Full Description

The head of an early Bronze Age perforated stone mace was found c.1915, on land at Potter Hill. It was made from a large brown gravel pebble, which had been polished to a smooth surface and oval shape. The stone had been bored through with an hour-glass perforation, to receive a shaft. The item is now in Newark Museum. {1} This mace head has close parallels to another mace head found nearby that is held by the Horniman Museum, that was described by them as a polished quartzite pebble with hour-glass perforation (though thought to be of possible Mesolithic date). The Horniman example was recorded as being found at Potters Hill, Newark, and is therefore recorded in the Nottinghamshire HER (as record MNT4275). Potter Hill straddles the border between Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, however, and since the exact findspot of the Horniman example is not known, it may in fact have been recovered from Lincolnshire. {2}{3}
