Full Description

Former east to west aligned stable block, on the south side of the crew yard at Towngate House Farm. It is of 2 storeys with 6 bays, and is built out of coursed limestone rubble with intervening courses of neatly dressed limestone blocks. The building has ashlar quoins, brick dressings around the openings, and a pitched roof covered in modern concrete tiles. The southern elevation has a double planked doors at the western end, a wooden stable door at the eastern end, and 3 ventilation openings. The northern elevation has a single door opening. There is an outbuilding off the eastern elevation, and the western elevation is concealed by the walled garden (see PRN 31756). The stable has 2 internal rooms, each divided into 4 equal sized stalls. There is an accessible attic space, that was likely originally used as a hayloft. The walls and floor of the attic have a wattle and plaster coating, and the centre of the floor has a hatch and the remains of a pulley/hoist system that would have been used to move feed and goods between the ground floor and the attic. The outbuilding off the eastern end of the stable block is a single storey building, built out of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins. It has a single pitched roof covered with corrugated iron sheeting. The northern elevation has a central stable door, 2 blocked doorways, and another half-blocked stable door. The southern elevation has a central blocked doorway with a single wooden door on the eastern end. The interior is divided into 3 rooms. The western room has names painted on the wall, with hooks, and was likely used to store harnesses for particular horses. The eastern room was likely a groom's room. The stable block is Grade II listed with the threshing barn (see PRN 39006). The stable block and outbuilding were recorded in 2009, prior to their conversion to residential dwellings. {1}{2}
