Full Description

Albert Hall Theatre is located at the junction of Trinity Street and Lewis Street in Gainsborough. It opened as Albert Hall in 1885, with seating for 1200. It was renamed Royal Albert Hall in 1891, and screened the first films in Gainsborough on 3-5 December, 1896. Renovations of the theatre were completed in 1904, and it was renamed again, becoming the Albert Theatre. It was converted into a cinema in February 1909, and was named the Kings Theatre. The theatre was badly damaged in a fire on 22 January, 1925. Repairs were undertaken, and it reopened on 5 September, 1927. The theatre was taken over by Gaumont/Denman Theatre in October 1928, and was run by them until 10 July, 1937, when ownership was taken over by J.F. Emery Circuit. It remained a cinema until 1958, when it was converted back to a theatre. It was converted into a bingo hall in 1992. Around 2015(?), the bingo hall closed, and the theatre sits empty. The frontage was recently restored. {1}
