Full Description

West Willoughby war memorial is located north of the main A153 road, near the entrance to the former South Lodge entrance to West Willoughby Hall. It is in the form of a decorated crucifix. The exact date of unveiling is unknown. In 1978, the crucifix was in a poor state of repair, and was refurbished by a local veteran. The memorial was again repaired and refurbished in 2003, when a new oak name-plaque was added and the memorial was re-dedicated. {1} This memorial takes the form of an elegant and well-executed timber Calvary cross, rising from a small, three-stepped brick base. It is uncertain exactly when the memorial was erected. A bronze figure of Christ is on its front face, below which is an oak shield displaying the dedication in gilt lettering. The memorial is reminiscent of the Roman Catholic shrines found on the Western Front, such as those at Neuve Chapelle and Bazentin la Petit. It commemorates twelve members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the seven fallen of that conflict.
