Full Description

Thorpe in the Fallows war memorial stands in a sheep pasture on the site of the former Church of St Mary Magdalene (see PRN 52519). It was erected and unveiled in 1919. The memorial consists of a 16ft (5m) high octagonal shaft incorporated with a plinth of blue pennant stone and Celtic cross. The Weldon stone memorial formerly boasted a Maltese cross supported on each side by a carved figure of a Templar clothed in chain mail and arrayed in a white shirt and tunic depicting the red Latin cross of the crusaders. This feature, however, became badly damaged in the early 1970s, and was thus replaced by a Celtic cross. The memorial honours those who fell in the First World War and Second World War. The memorial was restored in 2010. {1}
