Full Description

Tetford war memorial stands on high ground, at the junction of West Road and South Road. It is dedicated to those who died in the First World War and Second World War. The memorial is an octagonal spired obelisk surmounted by an orb. The exact date of the unveiling and dedication of the memorial is not known, though the memorial is thought to have been extant by early 1921. {1} This memorial takes the form of an octagonal spired stone monument with marble table featuring inscription, topped by a pinnacle and orb. It stands on a tapering base below a plinth, with columns and capitals at each corner. Each of the four columns support a triangular shaped pediment, with a cross at the apex of each. The memorial was erected by William Camplin, a local bricklayer, with work thought to have started in December 1919. A definite date for its completion and unveiling is not certain, though is likely to have been before early 1921. It commemorates 19 local individuals who fell in the First World War, with a further name being later added to commemorate the local individual who fell in the Second World War. Urgent repair works were conducted to the structure in 1968.
