Full Description
A Romano-British copper alloy figurine of a horse and rider is believed to have been found in this location, close to the Roman settlement of Crococalana (Brough). The figurine is known to have been found on the Lincolnshire side of the county border with Nottinghamshire, with the findspot believed to be close to the bottom of the hill from Brills Farm (possibly in the vicinity of SK 851 595, though this is quite an approximation). The figurine is comprised of two separate pieces (horse and rider), and depicts an armoured rider, believed to be a representation of the Roman god Mars, or an equivalent British deity, sitting astride a horse with one of its forelegs raised, as if it was moving at a canter or rearing up. These type of 'rider god' cult figurines are believed to date to the 3rd and 4th centuries, dating the cult to the latter half of the Roman period. The figurine was found in October 1989, and was donated to the British Museum in 1990, with the two pieces being accessioned separately. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The figurine was found between the 9th and 15th of October 1989. The two pieces are separate castings, but clearly fit together to form a single design. The pieces were reportedly found within 18 inches of each other, on land adjacent to the county border with Nottinghamshire, and close to the Fosse Way, although the exact findspot remains uncertain. {5}
The horse is depicted in an unusual position, with both legs on one side of its body raised, suggestive of an unusual type of gait. It has been suggested that this gait, together with the style of the horse, indicates it is of the smaller 'hobbey' type of horse, commonly found in medieval Britain and Ireland, and possibly indicating earlier origins for this type in the British Isles. {6}
