Full Description

Swaby has two memorial plaques commemorating the fallen from the First World War. The one found at the junction of Church Lane and Pado Lane, was originally hung in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (see PRN 48977), and was unveiled and dedicated in 1920. When the chapel was demolished in 1978, the plaque was moved to the surviving Sunday-school room turned village hall. It was moved again to its present location in 2001 when the village was considering demolishing the hall. The second was hung in the Church of St Nicolas (see PRN 47459), where it is still located. It was unveiled at the same time in 1920. Both memorial plaques are made out of white Carrara marble from Italy, and measure 2.5ft by 1.75ft (1m by 0.5m), with red and black incised letters. {1}
