Full Description

Sutton on Sea war memorial is located in an ornamental garden, at the junction of High Street and Trusthorpe Road. The memorial was unveiled in 1920, and is in the form of a monolith of Portland stone. It bears the names of those from Sutton on Sea and Trusthorpe who died in the First World War, the Second World War, and conflicts in Palestine and Northern Ireland. {1} This memorial takes the form of a substantial stone monolith or pillar of Portland stone, on a low base three courses high. The memorial was designed by the architect William Richard Gleave of Nottingham and was unveiled on 11 November 1920. It was originally located on the pullover between the town and the shore, but was relocated to its present position after the severe coastal floods of 1953. These floods caused extensive damage in Sutton on Sea and elsewhere, and led to the loss of many thousands of lives in England and other countries. Plans to rebuild the damage were soon initiated, and the landscape architect Dame Sylvia Crowe was commissioned to design replacement pleasure gardens. The memorial was sited in a new irregularly shaped garden as part of these plans, and now stands on a wide stone platform which has low metal railings. Beyond this, the memorial garden has low walls of rock-faced stone; these are of varying height and irregular pattern. Behind them is a rock garden which has a water cascade at its southern side. The relocated war memorial was re-dedicated in June 1955. The memorial commemorates twenty members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War an additional inscription was added to the memorial. The memorial was later altered to commemorate the conflicts in Palestine and Northern Ireland, and in 2005 it was refurbished. A new plaque installed then replaced the earlier, separate plaques.
