Full Description
Surfleet war memorial is located on Gosberton Road, to the north of the Church of St Laurence. Dedicated in 1921, the memorial is a 17ft (5m) high wayside cross, made out of Clipsham stone. The memorial, erected by Messrs Bowman and Sons of Grantham, honours the fallen of the First World War. At some point, potentially after the Second World War, the calvary top was replaced with a Latin cross. {1}
This memorial takes the form of an elegantly-designed and well-executed freestanding stone cross memorial. It is built of Lincolnshire Clipsham limestone on the lines of the Medieval Wayside Calvary and features slate panels on which the writing is incised. The memorial stands at about 17ft in height, and features a two-foot square pillar base, which is mounted on three steps. The base is surmounted by an octagonal hollow chambered shaft, which is topped by an embattled capital, on which stands a cross. It was unveiled and dedicated on the 8th of May 1921, and commemorates 17 local individuals who fell in the First World War. The memorial was blown down by a gale during the night of 12th January 1930, with parts of the stonework being damaged. This damage included the smashing of the former calvary top, which was later replaced with a Latin cross. Four further names were later added to commemorate those who fell in the Second World War.
