Full Description

Spilsby war memorial is situated in the churchyard of the Church of St James. It is a large cross standing upon an octagonal base of a plinth and three steps, and is based on Sir Reginald Blomfield's Cross of Sacrifice. Unveiled on the afternoon of Tuesday 1st of March 1921 to commemorate the First World War dead, it now also bears the names of the fallen from the Second World War and the Suez Crisis. {1}{2} This memorial takes the form of a well-carved stone cross with tapering shaft. Both the top and arms of the cross have flared ends, with the cross featuring a sword carved onto its west face. The dedications are carved onto the octagonal plinth and set of three octagonal steps on which the cross sits. The design takes its inspiration from Sir Reginald Blomfield's Cross of Sacrifice used in the British cemeteries in France and Flanders. The memorial stands in a prominent roadside location, within the north end of the churchyard of the Church of St James. It was unveiled in March 1921 by Major-General Sir A.R. Hoskins, and is dedicated to 28 soldiers from the parish who died in the First World War. Two additional inscriptions were subsequently added to the memorial, with the first honouring the eight parishioners who fell during the Second World War, and the second to honour a parishioner who fell during the Suez Crisis.
