Full Description

The former stable block at Old Mill House was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in November 2016, prior to its proposed conversion into a holiday cottage. It is unclear exactly when the building was originally constructed, though it is thought to date to the late 18th century, as it appears on the 1789 Lordship map (the earliest map available for this area). The building was partially rebuilt, repaired and extended during its lifetime. The building had a much smaller depiction on the 1789 map, but appears in its current long, thin form on maps from the mid to late 19th century. It is a single story building with two internal sections. The smaller section was likely a small stable, while the larger section likely began as a stable, but was later converted into a milking parlour in the 1950s. The building was then used as a general store. The roadside elevation is constructed out of uncoursed, rough blocks and large rounded stones, while the other three elevations are constructed out of coursed red brick, laid in an English Garden Wall bond. The roof is pitched and covered with handmade pantiles. {1}{2}
