Full Description
Discussions on how best to honour the First World War causalties from Saxilby with Ingleby began in 1916, with a desire to create a public recreation field being decided as the preferred option in February 1920. Funds to purchase an appropriate site were collected through public subscription and donations, with a 7.3 acre field at the eastern end of William Street being selected as the preferred location. Various sports fields were laid out after the field was acquired, with an existing building on the site being converted for use as a pavilion. A ceremony to open the ground was held on the 20th of April 1921, with a marble memorial plaque listing the fallen being unveiled inside the pavilion.
New wrought iron memorial gates commemorating the fallen of both the First World War and Second World War were added to the site in 1948. These gates were badly damaged in 2011, but subsequently repaired, following the awarding of a grant from the War Memorial Trust.
The marble memorial plaque was moved to the village hall (see MLI87210), after the orignal pavilion building was demolished and replaced with a new structure in 1970. {1}
