Full Description
North Coates war memorial stands on the green opposite the Church of St Nicholas. Dedicated in 1920, the memorial consists of a 7.5ft (2m) high polished grey granite obelisk. The memorial is dedicated to those who served in the First World War and the Second World War. An additional white marble memorial tablet inscribed with the names of the fallen was also unveiled in 1920, in the Wesleyan Methodist chapel (see MLI99049). This tablet was moved to the Church of St Nicholas (see MLI41362) when the chapel became redundant and was converted into a private dwelling in 1989. {1}
This memorial takes the form of a well-executed and striking, tall granite obelisk. It stands on a small, square concreted area, set within the green opposite the Church of St Nicholas. The memorial is 7.5ft (2m) in total height, with the polished obelisk rising from a collared pedestal on a three-stepped base. It was unveiled in 1920, and commemorates three local individuals who fell in the First World War, and 22 more who served in that conflict. Two further names were later added to commemorate those who fell in the Second World War.
