Full Description

Great Carlton war memorial stands at the corner of Main Road and Glebe Road. It was unveiled in early 1920, and was erected to honour those who served in the First World War. The memorial consists of a Celtic cross made of granite. It originally sat outside the Church Institute, c.200m to the south-east (see MLI125644), but was moved to its current site in 2000. {1} This memorial takes the form of a well-executed Celtic wheel cross of granite and York stone with leaded lettering. It is square in plan, with the tapered base of the cross standing on an inscribed plinth, atop a stepped granite base. The memorial was built by the Mawer Brothers of Louth, was originally erected outside the Church Institute, where it was unveiled in 1920 at a ceremony attended by local clergy and dignitaries. It was moved in 2000, where it now stands in a prominent roadside location at the junction of Main Road and Glebe Road, set slightly back from the road within a grass verge. The memorial is dedicated to 49 members of the parish who served in the First World War.
