Full Description
Early 12th century parish church, with later alterations, and considerable restoration works 1876-1911. Built of limestone ashlar with lead roofs. Features a truncated nave with clerestory, aisles, central tower, transepts, chancel with clerestory and aisles, and south porch. The 3 stage tower has chamfered string courses and embattled parapet with grotesques and early 14th century 2 light belfry openings with trefoil heads and quatrefoils. Several mid 10th to late 11th century Anglo-Saxon sculptural fragments are held inside the Church of St Swithin at Bicker (see MLI12526). The fragments suggest a Saxon church may have existed in this location, prior to the construction of the current early 12th century church.
