Full Description

Fulbeck war memorial is located near the lychgate of the Church of St Nicholas. The memorial, which honours the fallen of the First World War and the Second World War, was originally unveiled in 1921. The memorial was designed by London architect William Samuel Wetherby and executed by Messrs Earp and Hobbs Ltd of London and Manchester. The memorial has the base of a 13th century cross incorporated into it and sits on Portland stone steps. It stands at 25ft (7.5m) tall and the canopied heads depict on its four faces the Crucifixion, St George and the Dragon, the Vine and Rose of Sharon. {1} This memorial takes the form of a medieval lantern limestone cross in a Gothic Revival style, with the inclusion of the base of a 13th century churchyard cross adding further to its interest. The cross rests upon a square, two-stepped Portland stone base, on which stands a square plinth with incised inscriptions on all four sides. Placed on top of the plinth is the octagonal base of the 13th century churchyard cross, from which rises a tall shaft which tapers in octagonal section to a lantern cross head. The memorial was unveiled on 31 March 1921. It commemorates nineteen members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War an additional dedication was added to commemorate the four local men who fell in that conflict.
