Full Description

The range of outbuildings to the rear of 32 High Street (the Angel public house) was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in June 2017 to inform their proposed conversion to residential use. The structures are thought to date to the early 19th century, and comprise a one and a half storey main building with two smaller, single-storey attachments to the south-east. The buildings were constructed of whitewashed red brick, mostly laid in Flemish bond, and feature largely pantile roofs, replaced with modern corrugated sheeting in one part. The surviving structures had originally formed part of a much larger range of outbuildings, mostly demolished in the 20th century, which had run along the northern boundary of the inn site. Their exact original function is uncertain, although the use of brick floors and bullnosed bricks to some of the openings would suggest some accommodation for animals, and it was thought possible that they may have served as stables and tack rooms for travellers arriving at the inn. {1}{2}
