Full Description

Earthwork remains of a former medieval field system to the east of Hallington, comprising blocks of ridge and furrow, with associated field boundaries. Identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} A single redeposited sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from this area in November 2014, during archaeological field walking for the Louth Flood Alleviation Scheme. The sherd was a fragment from a Toynton Medieval Ware vessel, dating from the late 13th to 14th centuries. {2}{3} The remains of a single pit was recorded in this area in July 2015, during a subsequent phase of trial trenching for the Louth Flood Alleviation Scheme. A single, abraded pottery sherd from a late 13th to 14th century Toynton-type jug was recovered from the fill of the pit, indicating a medieval date for this feature. Two small flakes of fired clay were also recovered from the fill deposit, although these were very abraded and largely undiagnostic. {4}{5}
