Full Description
Several adjacent areas of medieval ridge and furrow, visible as blocks of parallel linear earthworks to the south of Scothern. They were identified on aerial photographs taken of this area, examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
An east to west aligned linear feature was recorded in August 2000, during archaeological monitoring of the construction of new classrooms at the Ellison Boulter CE Primary School. The feature was believed to be of medieval date, and likely associated with the remains of ridge and furrow previously recorded in this area. This ridge and furrow was aligned on a roughly north to south axis, suggesting the linear feature likely functioned as a field boundary, or drainage ditch, rather than representing the remains of a former furrow. A small quantity of probable late medieval and post-medieval ceramics were recovered from the backfill of the feature. {2}{3}
Whilst large areas of the ridge and furrow earthworks have been damaged by recent agricultural activity, the remains in the smaller fields to the immediate south-east of Scothern have survived well. These remains were noted as being particularly well defined during a site visit, conducted in June 2010. {4}
The prominent ridge and furrow remains in the field to the immediate west of South Dene Farm were the subject of a programme of earthwork survey, conducted in November 2016 to inform proposed residential development. The remains in this field were aligned on a roughly north-west to south-east axis, with the ridges spaced between 7m and 10m apart. The remains survived best in the western and central parts of the field, but had been partially levelled in the eastern third, likely as a result of horses grazing in this area. {5}{6}
An additional area was subject to a programme of earthwork survey conducted in June 2018 to inform a proposed residential development, and was found to be broadly similar to the area identified in November 2016. The approximate height differences between the base of the furrows and the toips of the ridges varies between 0.2m and 0.4m in this area. {7}{8}
