Full Description
The modern road that runs south into Sutterby village winds downhill through a steep cutting, which was created in the course of 19th century quarrying activity. The quarry was dug to extract chalk and limestone to supply an adjacent lime kiln with material, likely for the production of agricultural lime to be used on the nearby fields. Both the quarry and lime kiln are depicted on historical mapping of this area, and likely date to the early 19th century. The quarry appears to have been relatively short-lived, and the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map labels the works as an 'Old Stone Pit' suggesting they had gone out of use by the time the survey was conducted in the 1880s. This area of land has since been backfilled, and any remains of the kiln and quarry that may have survived are now likely buried. {1}
