Full Description

The first edition Ordnance Survey one inch to the mile map of 1824, and some earlier maps, show a long, narrow enclosure running from 'Hermitage', which stood on the north bank of the River Witham until 1764, to, or close to, 'Frog Hall' about one and a half kilometres to the north. {1}{2}{3} This seems to have been known as 'Armitage Causey' in 1630 [from Dugdale's History of Imbanking and Drayning (1662)]. {4} The causeway is visible on LiDAR mapping of the area continuing as a slightly raised bank running northwards beyond the enclosure visible on the early maps. It is heading towards the higher land around the site of Hundle Houses. {5} Hermitage had been acquired by Kirkstead Abbey in about 1100x1135 and Kirkstead also owned Hundlehouse Grange in Wildmore during the medieval period. It seems likely that the causeway belonged to Kirkstead and provided a southern access to their lands at Hundlehouse over the low lying fens of Wildmore. {6}{7}
