Full Description

The war memorial at Skegness is located to the south side of St Matthew's Church. Commemorating those who died in the First World War and the Second World War, the memorial was originally unveiled in 1923. The memorial itself is a 20ft (6m) high white stone cross, standing on an octagonal base and three steps. It features a crusader sword. Similar to the design of Sir Reginald Bloomfield's Cross of Sacrifice which can be found in British war cemeteries throughout the world. {1} The Skegness War Memorial was unveiled on 15 November 1923. It commemorates 71 local servicemen who fell during the First World War. Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the 57 fallen servicemen of that conflict and a further 11 civilians. It is located on the south side of the Church of St Matthew, at the junction of Lumley Avenue with Scarborough Avenue, on a small raised circular area. It consists of a stone Latin cross bearing a Sword of Sacrifice on the front face. It is set upon a tapering shaft with moulded base standing upon an octagonal plinth. The plinth is on a three-stepped octagonal base. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {2}
