Full Description
This group of ancilliary sturctures was included in the archaeological assessment of Sneath's Mill, completed in August 2010, to inform the site's future conservation management. The complex comprises a group of attached single-storey structures, built at various times in the 19th century.
The central building appears to be the earliest part of the complex, being in existance by the time of the 1845 tithe map survey. The building is constructed of red brick and features a pitched pantile roof. It appears to have functioned as a stable block, until the interior was tiled at some point in the second half of the 19th century, when it likely changed to a dairy function.
The southern building appears to have been a later addition, being added at some point after the production of the 1845 tithe map. It appears to have functioned as a former cart shed, and was timber-framed with some brick infill. The roof was mono-pitched, being constructed of a variety of different materials, reflecting later alterations and repairs.
The northern building is the least complete, having largely collapsed, and less is known about its origin. The building does appear to have been used as a stable block, however, and was constructed of similar materials to the central part, suggesting some possible contemporaneity. {1}
