Full Description

Kirton war memorial stands at the centre of the village, on the junction of High Street and Station Road. It is a 20ft (6m) tall, grey Cornish granite obelisk which stands on a 3ft (1m) square platform of five concrete steps. The memorial honours those who gave their lives in the First World War and the Second World War. {1} Kirton war memorial was designed by G Maile and Sons of London, and was unveiled on 12 November 1922. The memorial takes the form of a simple yet dignified obelisk in rough-hewn Cornish granite, located on The Green on the High Street, in the centre of Kirton. It consists of an obelisk on a square plinth and seven-stepped base sited in a triangular paved area surrounded by the original railings on a low wall with an ornate iron entrance gate located at one corner. Three new gates were added in 1996. The memorial was built to commemorate the 68 local servicemen who fell in the First World War. The names of the fallen from the Second World War were added at a later date. In 2009 16 names were added to the war memorial on new granite blocks with the help of grant aid from the War Memorials Trust.
