Full Description
The complex of farm buildings at High Ferry Farm, Sibsey, were the subject of a programme of detailed building recording, conducted in December 2014, prior to their proposed conversion to residential use. The complex comprises a two-storey northern range with adjoining single-storey ranges to the east and west, arranged in a U-shaped plan form around a central courtyard. The buildings are relatively unaltered, and display a high quality of design and execution, typical of the established High Farming movement of the mid to late 19th century. All of the structures are built of brick, laid in English bond to the exterior, and 3-course English Garden Wall bond to the interior, and have pitched roofs of pantiles.
The western part of the two-storey northern range comprised a 4 bay cart shed with granary over, whilst the eastern part probably functioned as a former threshing barn, as evidenced by the large, opposing set of double doors in its northern and southern elevations. This structure appears to have re-used an earlier king-post truss in the construction of the first-floor brick partition between the granary and threshing barn.
The single-storey western range was largely composed of cattle shelters, accessed by several large double door openings that were framed by bull-nosed bricks, and featured a two-bay pigsty at the southern end.
The single-storey eastern range comprised a number of stable rooms, with a former tack room and loose box at the southern end. A rather rare survival of early 20th century graffiti was found carved into the door between the northern and central rooms, which included drawings of early bicycles, initials, dominoes, horse-drawn ploughs, and a figure with a top hat. {1}{2}
